What’s a funny story about Bonhoeffer’s fiancé Maria?

Before the Nazis arrested Bonhoeffer, he became engaged to marry a young woman named Maria Von Wedemeyer. Even though he was still in prison, they kept planning their wedding. They thought Hitler would be defeated soon, and Bonhoeffer would be free.

Sometimes the prison guards allowed Bonhoeffer’s family and friends to visit him in prison. One year, Maria brought a Christmas tree to Bonhoeffer so large that it would not fit in his prison cell. They had to put it in the guards’ room instead!

Bonhoeffer and Maria wrote letters to one another while Bonhoeffer was in prison. These letters were published in the book, Love Letters From Cell 92.
